Search Method

Smart search

Smart Search is a Web of Science feature for quick literature search. Its AI type-ahead understands word meanings.

  1. Tick the box for“Try the new search” to enter Smart Search mode.
  2. Enter keywords related to your research content or researchers (just like searching in a browser).
  3. Click the Search button.

Advanced Search

Advanced Search lets you build precise queries with three modes: Fielded Search, Query Builder, and Researcher Search. You can filter results by topic, author, database, and date.

Fielded Search

  1. Click Advanced Search next to Smart Search.
  2. Select a database from the drop-down menu.
  3. Choose categories (e.g., Topic, Author) and enter keywords.
  4. Click Add Row to add more criteria and connect terms using logical operators (AND, OR, NOT).
  5. Click the Search button.

Query Builder

  1. Ensure the page is in the Advanced Search interface.
  2. Select Query Builder.
  3. Choose the databases you need.
  4. Compose a query with Field Tags and Boolean expressions, or use Add terms to Query Preview.
  5. Click Add Date Range to limit publication dates.
  6. Click the Search button.

Researcher search

  1. Click Researcher Search to open the search interface.
  2. Select a search criterion: Name, Author ORCID, or Organization.
  3. Enter the information in the text box.
  4. Click the Search button.
